Great for Kodachrome slides, 1 Dec 2009

It took me several goes at buying and returning products that included in the very small print deep in the manual that Kodachrome slides were a no no.

Then I purchased the V750 Pro. See the other reviews for the quality of the product and of the scanned images, it is truly excellent and in a different league to the lower cost scanners.

The V750 Pro comes with its own Epson scanning software. This is good enough and makes use of the hardware facilities.

Kodachrome slides cannot be adjusted or cleaned (ICE) by the hardware. The bundled Laser Imaging SilverFast ai enables all the processing to be done in the PC and avoids any hardware pre-processing. Results are excellent.

For thin cardboard slide mounts, set the slide scanning frame to 3.5 mm. The adjustment feet need to point to the + sign, not explained anywhere in the manuals (picked this tip up on a forum). Other setting are: no clips for 2.5mm and - sign for 3.0 mm.

I've used Epson scanners for years and been very pleased with their performance. However, the V750 is not just good, it's outstanding. I wanted a scanner that would do a good job of scanning 35mm trannies as well as the usual stuff, but I couldn't justify the cost of a dedicated film scanner. None of the scanners I've had in the past have been any more than passable in this respect, but the V750 Pro does a remarkable job, producing crisp scans that rival those of all but the really high-end film scanners (it does everything else pretty damn well too). My only real gripe is the fact that the fluid mount is not included with the V750 Pro in the UK - it has to be obtained separately from Epson, and nowhere on their website are we told how to do this (at least, I haven't been able to find anything). However, if you contact Epson UK they will send you the mount free of charge - but I had to do some searching on the internet to find this out, eventually making this discovery via an online forum. It seems odd that Epson have omitted something that would surely make the V750 even more attractive, and even odder that they don't advise people how to obtain the mount. Never mind, it didn't put me off and Epson have assured me they have the mount on order for me. In spite of this blip this is a superb scanner and I thoroughly recommend it.

I'm so glad I purchased this. I've thousands of slide, colour and B&W negatives, mostly 35mm, but some 120 and 5x4s. This scanner does all formats and produces beautiful scans.

What you need to know.

It comes bundled with Monaco EZColor to control colour, using ICC profiles. You calibrate your system using the targets (film and paper artwork.) You get to calibrate your scanner, monitor and printer. It's quick, easy and produces consistant colour.

It comes bundled with LaserSoft Silverfast Ai. Takes a little learning due to German English, but it's very good once you get used to it. The autopilot settings produce good results straight away. Remember to get the free upgrade from Silverfast, after you have registered the copy that comes with your scanner.

It does not come with the Fluid Mount Accessory (FMA). You have to send your invoice off to Epson (email a PDF) for them to send you the FMA. If you want the very best scans this unit can produce you need to use the FMA. Especially if you have a slides and negs that are dirty, scratched or grainy. The difference after using scanner fluid is amazing. (Look up Haynes Graphic Arts Ltd and ask about the V750 (FMA) starter kit.
The Epson scan software is not bad either, many will find this sufficient to get good scans without taxing the brain cells.

This unit is so good you will be able to get perfectly acceptable 16x20 prints from those old Ektachrome / Kodachrome slides with a little care.

You will be save countless hours in Photoshop by using Digital ICE to clean up your scans.

It has a IR sensor and can be used in multiple scan / pass to render a greater dynamic range (using Silverfast.)

You can pay £[...] for a 2nd hand Nikon film scanner, that will only do 35mm film. You can pay £[...] for a new Nikon scanner that does only 35 and 120 film. The scans you get from the V750 are of similiar quality, but when you get to 120 there is not £[...] worth of difference.

I reckon this is the only scanner you need to convert your film stock to digital. It might even convert you to digitised medium format film workflow. No digital camera will hold a candle to a medium format slide / neg that is scanned using this unit. Plus, no mucking about in the darkroom.

I'm impressed, you will be if your looking for a good scanner that is good at all it sets out to do.

Excellent shredder - opened the box, plugged it and away you go. Ready to use immediately with very little assembly. Add the wheels for mobility takes less than five minutes. I have bought cheap shredders and expensive shredders and this is the best one ever.

I only experienced any jams when the bin was full - it is very sensitive to that and will just stop. You press reverse or forward to clear the jam and your back to shredder action.

I read quite a few reviews on shredders and honestly it should not take this long to select a good shredder but it does simply because there are so many bad ones. Take my advice, this may bit a little bit more than what you were expecting to spend but you will not regret it.

I bought this item in November 2008 and whilst it shreds beautifully, if it was placed in sunlight it tended to misread the "bin full" signal and turn itself off. This was resolved by keeping it out of sunlight. This fault was acknowledged by the manufacturer.

However, this morning for no apparent reason the machine came very close to catching fire. It was plugged in but not switched on. There was a strong smell and luckily I had opened a door next to the machine because smoke started pouring out of it, right against the curtains. The machine was red hot. I think it would have caught fire within minutes if not seconds. Luckily I was able to unplug it and push it outside, but I hate to think what would have happened had I not been at home.

This is a very serious fault and whilst the company I bought it from, through Amazon, have been most helpful and offered to replace it immediately, I would have serious doubts about buying another one.

This is a crosscut shredder which claims to cut to to level 3 security confetti- (seems to be 4*35mm). I've tested it and it does shred 10 sheets of 80gsm A4 paper at once. You can shred credit cards by inserting one dead centre in the paper slot (not tested yet). The CD slot cuts off the outer "wings" of the CD so that you have three pieces- safer than snapping the little suckers. I decided on this slighty more expensive (white) version as the comparable model in the "black" series said that it embossed the cds with dimples- I wasn't sure how effective that would be. The manufacturer guarantee is for 2 years.

So after 2 weeks- I'm definitely happier with a shredder with a drawer. Previously I've had a simpler model (Rexel) which annoyed me because you had to lift off the heavy top just to see if it had jammed because there was too much shredded paper in - or if it had just jammed. So despite the fact it takes up the space of a large waste paper basket- the ease of checking how full it is outweighs its footprint. Don't be alarmed by the picture- that cut away on the drawer has a clear plastic insert behind it. I'm not too impressed by the castors which glide like a possessed supermarket trolley.

As to use- this shredder isn't ever going to feature on one of those movies where the feds are moving in and the dodgy businessmen are destroying all the evidence. The instructions claim you can shred for THREE minutes only before you need to let the cutters cool down for 20 minutes. Otherwise it'll switch itself off and not let you play for a full 50 minutes. So for me this is fine- I'm on top of my papertrail and I'm really only using it on a daily basis to go through the post- making sure anything with my address is in tiny pieces as everyone advises these days. As the manufacturer's dotcom site (Snopake) isn't very revealing I'm pretty glad I went for the 10 sheet model- just so that if there are a few things to destroy, they're gone in one or two passes. If you have a heavier paperload then you may want to think about the 15 or 20 sheet versions- but of course that costs extra and crikey 80 quid seems sufficient to pay for an electronic hamster.

Maintenance. Apparently because cross cut shredders create far more fine particles than a simple shredder, it's imperative to keep maintaining your machine with regular oiling. And- surprise surprise, they claim that you need a specialist oil and WD40 won't cut it. Now the instructions, such as they are contradict themselves as to how often you need to oil. The minimum appears to be monthly or when you've filled the bin (120 A4 sheets). Otherwise oil every fortnight.

If you're expecting free oiling sheets as per the product description, you're likely to be diappointed as I was and Amazon so far haven't come up with a solution to the missing bits without causing me major inconvenience. The instructions also suggest oiling the cutters directly with a spray can/oil bottle or adding oily lines to a piece of paper and feeding it through. Probably any shredder oil will do- I'm trying the "Swordfish" brand when I eventually fill the bin.

1 July 2010- the shredder is still going strong, but two of its little wheels have snapped off ( and I've been gentle!) As the issue with previous (Fellowes) shredders was with the sensor failing, I'm still impressed with Swordfish (wheels aren't everything!)

Bizarre but true.....a printer that won't actually print....At least if you are trying to use it from Win7.

Lets start the review with saying that this printer (SX435W) will not print from a Win7 computer over a USB cable...This is despite the very large "Win 7 compatible" sticker on the packaging.

It will scan, it will photocopy and it will print photos from the built-in memory card reader wonderfully....it just won't print from your computer.

This applies to Win7 32-bit and Win7 64 bit and when you try to print from your computer, the SX435W makes a lot of noise and fuss but nothing else.

EDIT
Epson have just (End of November 2011) released new firmware for the Printer and...at last...it actually prints under Win7.
The software driver auto-prompts you to go through the firmware install process and it's painless. As soon as that's installed...then voila....the printer actually works.
....Just a shame I was stuck with it for weeks before the new firmware was released.

What kind of company would be crazy enough to release a "Win7 compatible printer" that is not a "Win7 compatible printer"?
Clearly a company that thinks it's "Exceed Your Vision" logo doesn't apply to it's quality testing team.

As the title says, this is one of the few chap-ish printers that have separate inks which theoretically cuts down costs in replacements. Having previously owned a Canon however I find the Epsom frustratingly slow and incredibly noisy. My canon took a few secons to scan an A4 document - this new printer-scanner takes 3 minutes! The fold out document tray is plasticky and not very robust. It does the job print-wise, but it's really loud and again way slower than my previous Canon.

This printer was purchased mainly for it's wi fi capability and straight out of the box it did exactly what it said on the box, even to the point of a free app for the Ipad from epson's web site.
The quality of print is excellent and the card reader is a very good tool, the scanner reproduced a very acceptable print of both colour and black and white photo's.
All in all excellent performance and value for money.
